Cedar Street Residence

The owners of this 1925 Arts & Crafts Bungalow loved the curb appeal of the existing house, which sat in the shadows of the historic Masonic Temple in Old Town Alexandria.  However, after a quick walk around to the back, the beautiful detailing of the front morphed into a bad 1980’s addition that attempted to match the original house but failed in functionality and execution.

The key details added to the addition were the large, flared overhangs with beautiful exposed sculpted rafter tails and brackets.  All the doors and windows received the original tapered trim and historic sills. At the end, the exterior of the house looked seamless and fit perfectly with the historic texture of the neighborhood. The interior of house becomes a surprise upon entering, tending to the owners’ contemporary aesthetic.  The modern elements were subtle and provided a wonderful juxtaposition with the traditional bones of the house.
