Shugaar Residence

The rebirth of the Shugaar Residence celebrates the original architecture of a turn of the century farmhouse located in Arlington County, Virginia. The farmhouse had been in disrepair for years, on the verge of demolition when the new owners purchased house and started the restoration / addition. The preservation of this house was critical to preserving the early 20th century fabric of this neighborhood.

In order to make the 1,024 sf dilapidated farmhouse into a new home, the project called for a complete renovation of the existing structure and the design of additions to the left side and rear of the original building. The original front door was relocated to the far left side of the front elevation, along with the replacement of the entire front porch.

The materials and detailing of the restoration, along with the scale and massing of the addition, combine to uphold the architectural integrity of the original farmhouse. Today, the farmhouse is more beautiful than it was when it received its first coat of paint a hundred years ago.
